Clerks review

For me, one of the best ever made. It's simplistic nature is what gets me about this. Sure the acting is amateurish, and a little lame, but it works. The perspective of a clerk is accurate enough to someone who's been in said position.

An inspiring piece of work, despite smith saying it was his worst, which is understandable, when comparing it against his later work.

This, for me will always be what got me into film.

Karan.

Transformers: The Revenge of The Fallen review

Pathetic attempt at a sequel, all over the place. All that was visible was welding if two metals constantly. Only thing that saved it was the end.

Ok, so I know that wasn't much of a review, but I guess thats all it deserved. Well thats a little harsh. At least it got it's own banner.

Karan.

The Matrix review

Truly a historic movie, took me a while to actually get round to watching, but definitely worth the wait. Yeah, Keanu has the same old wooden acting, but who gives a damn?? Suits him. Movie itself was pretty intense, had my attention throughout, didn't feel like going for a piss at anytime during this.

Karan.

Race To Witch Mountain Review

Ok, not bad in places, but other parts were just corny as balls. It amazes me how kidscan still be amused by stupid one liners. It really boggles the mind. I mean, "I have older brothers" really??? If you've seen it you'll know what talking about. I wouldn't say it was a bad movie but at the end, I was just left with a 'thats it?' sort of feeling. To be honest, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson took this for me. Yes, I'm aware he's dropped that name, don't care. 3.5 is me being pretty generous. Overall, not a bad movie, just leave it to the kids.

Karan

Special FX/ Mini reviews

Maaaaan..I've been checking out some tutorials on how to do some amazing Special Effects using only After Effects, and I have to say- it's pretty effing sweet. I'll hopefull be working on some of these during the course of the holidays sometime, because it'd be badass to learn how to do it. You've probably seen the Lightsaber one by now, and I want to go a step up from that- A fight scene, using Lightsabers. It'd take a mother of time to do, but I'm willing to take that time out to do it.

My god how awesome would that be- I invisioned it earlier today, when a friend gave me the idea. Just makes me want to do it even more. Wrong time at the moment lol. It's like 22:19- too dark.

I'm posting up some mini-reviews of some movies in a sec, just so I can get them out here.

Karan.

P.S. I figured i'd use my name from now on to sign off, keep a little professional courtest at least. Ha!

Lightsaber V2

You may remember me posting a video of me being a Jedi- http://kkd2010.blogspot.com/2008/08/crappy-attempt-at-lightsaber-effect.html

This video is a huge improvement, even though it's long overdue. Instead of manually rotoscoping it, I used Andrew Kramer's Lightsaber preset:http://library.creativecow.net/articles/kramer_andrew/lightsaber.php

It's relatively simple to do, just a little time consuming, hence a short clip.

Enjoy!

Incredible Hulk Review

I'm baaack again, but for a review I haven't promised. But I just watched it, so I thought I'd publish it.

So just watched this for a second time, and rightly so. Watching it a second time just further solidifies it's place in Comic Book-Movie history. It's just an amazing movie, well thought out, getting right into the plot from the start was a good way of introducing new comers to the story. There are scenes in the movie that just annoyed me, but then nowadays it's just expected. I'm referring to the romantic antics lol that rhymes. Understandably, that's going to be in there anyway, but what can I do. The action scenes in this are just..wow..It never ceases to amaze me how each Marvel film is just a step up from it's predecessor.

The final battle was so well done, in my opinion, it was refreshing seeing some hardcore brutality, granted there were some brutal scenes in Spider-Man, but I think this one has to take the cake. The CGI..Oh the CGI. The Hulk in this was probably one of the best pieces of work I've seen in a Marvel film. Not THE best, but one of. Just the first time that he's fully revealed was pretty damn awesome, his veiny, muscle brutish appearance was effing sweet. Sounds pretty gay lol. Acting was what I'd expect, how Edward Norton portrayed Banner as the quiet geeky, science lab- Hang on..Sounds like Peter Parker to me..Anyway, Liv Tyler's was abit..meh. I just didn't feel it from her. Blegh. I think I'm going on far too long than usual.

Storyboarding

So earlier, when I said I was going to go for a shoot and it failed, it was for a series of 10 episodes shorts of 5 minutes each. Then the last post not long ago said I was going to begin shooting a short film. So we're going to being that shortly hopefully, but again HOPEFULLY.

Anyway, for the series of 10 episodes, I had storyboarded an episode, granted it wasn't the best looking or whatever, but i got by, and it was really an experimental process for me. For my final project on my Foundation course, I made a storyboard based on a 'Day in the life of me', and i thought I'd use abit of experience from that. Abit was right. What I produced compared to my final project, was definitely a step down, but like I said it was exprimental.

Anyway, just thought I'd put a little blog down of my experimental experience. Booum. Done.

Short Film

So once again, Kazed lies. Love it. Anyway, so now we're working on a Short Film which script still needs to be completed, but we've casted it, but knowing our luck it'll fail. But we must soldier on. It'll happen, one way or another, It has to. Otherwise this summer was a waste. I refuse to have accomplished nothing this summer. Watch this space people.

Another broken promise. Lol.

So I said I'd post some of the stuff i promised below, which I definitely will over the course of the next few days, but right now I'll just say that the shooting which was supposed to go down this past Sunday, didn't go down. The details I won't give, but that's all that needs to be said right now. Like I said, I'll post the stuff a little later, I've been working on a few things by myself, on the side separate from MidnightBlue Productions. Right now I have the feeling I have swine flu, so let's hope this Mac doesn't get any viruses. OHHHHHH. I'm so bad.

P.S. I bought an iMac. Yes I did.

So the above will be talked about within the next few days, so hopefully I'll have a nice collection of updated blog entries. Sweet.

Logos and stuff.

So I'm thinking of the logo I've used on my blog to be my actual logo. Why? Ok so this is how the idea came up. I love blue comedy. My favourite colour is black. My friend's favourite colour is blue. Blue + Black = Midnight Blue. Thats how we came up with it. Awesome. Anyway, so ideas, but looks like I'll be keeping the one above so it probably doesn't matter.

More ideas, yo

So looking over at other peoples' blogs, I thought I'd get an idea of what kind of stuff I should do. It helped, I'll say that much. I'm still in a position where I'm afraid of making the wrong decision, something which I've been scared of for a long time. I don't know why, it's just like that.

So going back to one of my original pathetic ideas, about this comic book thing, I just don't know..I think it's a good thing I have my review tommorrow, maybe I can get some good guidance as to what I should do.

Ugh..Kill me. With just over a month to go, I'm gonna have to pull something out of my ass, and make it good.

Bolt review

Pixar. Ahhh Pixar. What can I say? They have once again succeeded in making a beautiful movie. Now, the opening scenes are of Bolt performing a number of heroic acts, and does things that only a 'superdog' could do. A little after this event, it's revealed that all of these acts are staged, and are being shot for a popular show about the dog. The dog has been made to believe he is actually a superhero, and his owner is basically his sidekick. So throughout the movie he encounters different characters who have seen him on TV and begin to convince him he actually isn't a superhero. He realises this, and gets upset, and then his sidekick gets into trouble and he saves her. Endletsallhugandkissandgiveflowerstoeachother.

I realise this is an animated movie(Seriously, duh), but I felt it needed a review. I think John Travolta was a perfect choice for Bolt, maybe there could have been another fitting actor, but who am I to know. The story had shades of Monsters Inc., I guess because of the whole 'saving best friend' thing. Not the greatest of comparisons, but meh.

The score of Bolt..All I can say is wow. Seriously, I don't think I've heard a better soundtrack for another Pixar movie than this, apart from maybe Toy Story, but then this one is awesome. Seriously, It just fits the action scenes perfectly, and the inclusion of Miley Cyrus and John Travolta performing a track didn't hurt. I'm not a fan of Cyrus, nor do i hate her, I just don't think Hannah Montana is all that great. Anyway, not the time. But if you haven't heard it, I suggest you give it a listen, if your a fan of movie soundtracks/scores. Also, "Barking at the moon" by Jenny Lewis is pretty sweet too.

This is a good movie, perfect for children, Pixar have never disappointed me, unlike some people who just try to be something they're not *cough*DREAMWORKS*cough*. but yeah, good movie, if you've ever been a fan of the other Pixar movies, you won't be disappointed.

K2010

UPDATE, yo.

Ok, so wow. It's been a while since I posted on this here bloggage, I was on holiday. In California. So technically, I was American, for like 2 weeks. Anyway, moving on, I took alot of pictures. ALOT. Maybe around the 600 region. Which is quite alot for me, seeing as I've never taken that much before. On a trip, anyway. I went to Hollywood. then like, they asked me why I'm so awesome, then I said it was because I have like these individual strands of hair, that like when they're touched, the person who touches them turns into grass. Thats why I'm so awesome. So like after that, they gave me my own star on the Walk of Fame.

But seriously, surprisingly I was thinking of the work I had to do while I was there. I can honestly say that I have no idea what to do for my Audiovisual element. I'm struggling, just a little though, so hang on, I guess I should reprhrase it; I DO have an idea of what I should do- But it won't work. This is it- A documentary I guess, of my time in the US. But that doesn't make much sense to me. Seeing as hald of the footage I shot was of me. Lol. So decisions, decisions.

Marley & Me

So I saw this movie yesterday, and I have to say, I really did think it was going to be..well, crap. Well I can say that it wasn't, an was incredibly emotional towards the end.

Synopsis from fandango.com: "Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston go to the dogs with Marley & Me, a tale of a couple embarking on the adventure of marriage, career, family, and the world's worst dog. At least that's how writer and newlywed John comes to describe his blonde lab, Marley, when he takes the puppy home and finds that the fluff-ball has an uncanny ability to eat and/or destroy just about anything. As years go by, John and his wife, Jennifer, contemplate having babies and moving across the country, while Marley grows into 100 lbs. of funny, wild, completely untrainable canine companionship"

So I guess overall it IS a good movie, but I'm not sure if emotional makes a good movie. But we'll talk about that at another time. Right now let's talk about the movie, yo.

I thought that Owen Wilson did a good job of acting in the film, I just think that he didn't do a good job of being emotional. There are scenes where he can visually make himself look upset, but I don't think that's enough. A perfect example of a good emotional performance, Jennifer Aniston. I can always believe her performances in these types of roles, she projects herself well.

The plot was good, I wouldn't say it was the most unique of stories, although based on a book, I don't think it would've been that much of a big deal if it wasn't even made. HA. No no, It's financial success was, or shall I say is well deserved. Blah, Thats all I can put down right now, so I'll leave you with this.

I'll be posting again soon. LOL.

Essay, yo

So after today's seminar about essay structure, there was a question part of the structure which asked a question about who my practitioners were. After stating the names of my chosen practitioners, Jools had reminded me about the 'Diverse' in the brief. I had to then rethink my practitioners; Kevin Smith, Judd Apatow, Sally Menke. The first two are Director/Producer, respectively, whereas the 3rd one, is an Editor. My original choice was Quentin Tarantino, but Sally Menke was the person who edits most of Tarantino's movies, so I thought it'd be an interesting choice to go for someone who was closely connected to one of my original choices.

So anyway, I found a documentary called "THE CUTTING EDGE: the magic of movie editing", which I think, I THINK, its a documentary about Editing. It even has Tarantino and Menke in it, so it'll be easy for me to write about my third practitioner.

P.S

Also, just a quick reminder for myself I guess, I'll be posting up a review(ish) for a movie I saw in yesterday's lecture, Falling Down.

Shape that represents me, octohundrethougon

So here it is, a shape that represents me.

I'll be honest, I have no idea what the shape is called, but I had to edit the faces so it gave me this many sides.

The reason? I believe that I'm a relatively complex person to figure out, although one may think they know one of my sides, theres always going to be another side they've never seen. Same goes for myself, I don't think I know me completely, hence the gazillion sides. The colour is I guess supposed to symbolise the simplicity of my lifestyle I guess. I won't go into that, however, it'll take too long. Lolz.

Sex Drive

Heres the first of one of the reviews from my little notebook I got a while back.

"Sex Drive"

From Wikipedia - "Sex Drive is a 2008 comedy film about a high school senior who goes on a cross-country road trip to hook up with a girl he met online. It is based on the novel All the Way, by Andy Behrens. The film was directed by Sean Anders, and stars Josh Zuckerman, Clark Duke, and Amanda Crew. James Marsden and Seth Green appear in supporting roles"

The opening of the movie is reminiscent to the earlier American Pie movies, it almost seemed like a spin-off. For the most part, the movie was ever so predictable, and the storyline resembled 'Eurotrip', another 'Teen movie' released in the last decade. The story, in a nutshell, is basically about a boy in his late teens who has been talking to a girl over the internet, and basically goes on a DRIVE to see this girl, eventually to have SEX. Hence the name, Sex Drive.

There were a few decent laughs, moreso toward the end of the movie. The plot was predictable, as I mentioned before, and I saw the ending coming from a mile away, of course anyone could really, as the movie progressed, it became more and more clear what would happen.

Certain parts of the movie seemed a little irrellevant to the story, but it wasn't really a bad thing, just something worth mentioning, I guess.

Overall, the movie wasn't bad by any means, the director I've never actually heard of, but having James Marsden( X-Men I/II/II, Enchanted) and Seth Green(Family Guy, Goldmember) in the mix as supporting roles didn't hurt it at all. It could be the beginning of a new 'American Pie' type series.

Enchanted LOL.

Ok, so watching this movie probably wasn't high on my list of ones to see, but I'm not gonna lie..I enjoyed it. yes, it was corny, yes, it was VERY lame, and yes, the singing and dancing was retarded. But- I enjoyed it. While watching the movie, I noticed references to older Disney movies, such as Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty. There were others, but I'll get to that in a moment. The story seemed to take quite a large slice from Snow White, such as the poison apple, and the whole 'kiss-from-prince-to-wake-up-from-deep-sleep' malarky. Giselle made references from time to time to Snow White, i.e. Dwarves. After reading another review of this movie, I noticed there were plenty of other references to old Disney classics, such as The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Sword in the Stone, and others. Heres the list of references to the other movies:

"Books open in many of the classic Disney films. The pop-up book is a modern take off on the traditional openings of Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. The hall the book is in is based on Evind Eryle’s artwork for Sleeping Beauty.

Giselle is a combination of Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel and Belle, but mostly she approaches life much as Snow White would.

Animal friends accompany all of the classic princesses on their journeys - Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty.

You can see the bell jar with the rose in it, from Beauty and the Beast, clearly on the right as the camera pushes towards Giselle and Pip sitting on window seat.

Prince Edward is a combination of Prince Charming, Prince Philip and the Prince from Cinderella and Prince Eric from The Little Mermaid.

The name of the law firm is an homage to the songwriters of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves: Frank Churchill, Leigh Harline and Paul J. Smith.

The last name of the divorcing couple is Banks, based on the troubled parents in Mary Poppins.
Robert’s assistant Sam is played by Jodi Benson, the voice of Ariel in The Little Mermaid.

The “Happy Working Song” is a complete homage to “Whistle While You Work.” It contains references to many other Disney films.

The ending of the song is much like the end of “Under the Sea” from The Little Mermaid or “Be Our Guest” from Beauty and the Beast.

Poison apples are a direct reference from Snow White.

Rapunzel is being performed in the bandshell - an homage to the upcoming Disney film.

Square trees in the Rapunzel performance look like the Eyvind Earle designs for the Sleeping Beauty trees.

While Edward is in the hotel room changing channels, he sees both the news and a soap opera.

The soap opera star is Paige O’Hara, the voice of Belle in Beauty and the Beast. Her name is Angela after Angela Lansbury, Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast.

The music that underscores the soap opera is the song Beauty and the Beast.

The Bella Notte Restaurant is named after the song in Lady and the Tramp. There is a sign in the window at the far end of the restaurant.

In Morgan’s bedroom as Giselle tells her the Red Riding Hood story: There is a Belle doll wearing sunglasses, which can be seen in the chair at the start of the scene.

During Edward’s search for Giselle in the apartment complex: The pregnant mom is Judy Kuhn, the singing voice of Pocahontas.

During the Ballroom scene: The Old Hag appears and convinces Giselle to bite into the last of the Snow White.

A kiss will wake Giselle from her sleep - Snow White and Sleeping Beauty.

Giselle loses her glass slipper - Cinderella. As well, the slipper fits Nancy perfectly - also Cinderella.

Along with the references in the film, the end credits also include quite a few visual references to past Disney classics, including:
Fairies from Fantasia
Wishing well from Snow White
Frog Prince and kissing Princess from the upcoming Princess and the Frog
Cinderella ball
Cinderella’s palace
Cinderella’s coach
Cinderella’s mice friends
The Little Mermaid
Cinderella’s glass slipper

The sword in the stone
biting the poison apple
Malefiecent the dragon"

That was taken from FilmSchoolRejects.com(http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/news/enchanted-a-magical-experience-for-any-disney-fan.php)

So, although I haven't scraped the tip of the iceberg with this movie and I'd love to point out flaws and whatnot, It's late. And I was told not to write long ass reviews. Lol.

Now, another subject, my blog, I haven't posted in a while now, which is a very bad thing. very, VERY bad. I need to keep on top of this, however, I've been sort of 'reviewing' movies-ish, I'll probably type those up again soon. I wish not to scan them in cuz then it'll look like I've done too little. Ok, so i had my review last thursday, and basically i was told to do like a minimum of 2 entires a week. this, to me was doable. is doable a word? whatevs. anyway, today we had a lecture and a seminar, both were quite very fulfilling. The lecture introduced me to a new movie; a movie that has supposedly influenced Tim Burton. Instantly, i could see the resemblance between this and Burtons movies.

The seminar got me thinking about doing some filming whenever i could. the lesson was about active learning. but more on this a little later. I'm not sure how much i get charged for this on my phone lol.

Weird transcript of SL 'interview'

So I was talking to a relatively normal person on SL. Not.

[5:11] Kaz Weatherwax: Hi
[5:12] Rainbow Sugarplum: hello
[5:12] Kaz Weatherwax: Mind if I ask you some questions
[5:12] Kaz Weatherwax: Its for a course I'm doing
[5:12] Rainbow Sugarplum: no, go ahead..
[5:12] Kaz Weatherwax: Sweet.
[5:12] Kaz Weatherwax: So WHat do you do here exactly? As in, YOU in particular..?
[5:13] Rainbow Sugarplum: well i dance in the club over there, and i rent this shop..
[5:13] Kaz Weatherwax: Coco Bongo?
[5:13] Rainbow Sugarplum: yes, its agreat club i love it..
[5:14] Kaz Weatherwax: So, are you giving rent, or are you getting it?
[5:14] Rainbow Sugarplum: i pay rent to the owner,, so i can sell my stuff..
[5:14] Kaz Weatherwax: Ahh sweet
[5:14] Kaz Weatherwax: And you sell skins and stuff?
[5:15] Rainbow Sugarplum: sometimes..
[5:15] Rainbow Sugarplum: but im not expensive like all the other shops..
[5:15] Kaz Weatherwax: I see
[5:15] Rainbow Sugarplum: i sell things as cheap as i can..
[5:16] Kaz Weatherwax: So for example, how much is an average skin and how much do you sell them for?
[5:16] Rainbow Sugarplum: an average skin can cost anything between 300ls..to....8000ls..
[5:17] Kaz Weatherwax: how much real money have you invested in this?
[5:18] Rainbow Sugarplum: why?
[5:18] Kaz Weatherwax: Lol you don't have to answer it, I'm just finding stuff out about SL and people in it
[5:18] Rainbow Sugarplum: who are you?.. and why al the questions..?
[5:18] Kaz Weatherwax: Tell me if your uncomfortable with these questions
[5:19] Rainbow Sugarplum: well if im uncomfortable i,ll tell you and i will not answer..
[5:19] Rainbow Sugarplum: it depends how personal you get..lol..
[5:20] Kaz Weatherwax: Lol no problem
[5:20] Rainbow Sugarplum: i pay 300 ls aweek for my rental of this shop..
[5:21] Kaz Weatherwax: Oh cool
[5:21] Kaz Weatherwax: I think thats plenty of info for more
[5:21] Kaz Weatherwax: Thanks for that
[5:21] Rainbow Sugarplum: but if i dont sell anything then whatever i make at the club has to pay the rent.. but i can earn 300ls in one night..

This is the second person who got all weird when I asked about money..Its like they're not allowed or something..The first person got defensive and snapped at me saying "its personal". I think its a bad area to delve into. VERY bad.

Second Life Update

So these pictures are from when i visited someone's home in Second Life, the person who owns it was the same person who had helped me as I explained in my earlier post. It was pretty cool seeing a house modelled in SL, but when I asked her about how much she had spent on the house, she said 3000. Now, I wasn't sure if that was 3000 real or 3000 in Linden dollars. I'm gonna go ahead and guess that she spent 3000 in real money. 3000 (I don't think) won't buy you a house, 3000 in real money is approximately 784144, this is based on $3000, not £. But anyway, its really hard trying to find someone to talk to on SL, but the girl mentioned above was indeed quite helpful.

I'm not sure if she actually sleeps in this bed and watched herself sleep for 8 hours, but hey, who wouldn't?!

I've now seen this movie twice, and its just..wow. The story, the acting, is amazing. Granted, I'm a fan of wrestling so theres going to be that added element of interest for me, but even for a person who doesn't like wrestling, i would definitely recommend. The angles used in this movie were for me, brilliant, and theres a shot at the end of the movie which was just fantastic..I loved every second of this movie, I'll definitely be watching it again. Brilliant.
